New product came to my attetion BreezyPacks:

Our cases are designed to keep medicine around room temperature and prevent them from overheating; they do this by using active chemicals that cool down the medication inside when temperatures are too high, and regenerate by themselves at room temperature, meaning the user can just leave their medicine inside and forget about this issue.

Our cases were originally designed with Insulin in mind, but we quickly discovered that many people with allergies who live or travel in hot climates found them useful. Our Breezy Extra model was designed to fit two EpiPens or Auvi-Q/Allreject autoinjectors and keep them safe from the heat.

With the increase in Coronavirus Disease cases, comes an increase in use of hand sanitizers, as well as demand for them. For sometime a few manufactures have been producing hand sanitizes using almond oil. Now with a sudden increase in demand for hand sanitizers, distilleries are now switching some or all of their production to hand sanitizers. Many of these liquor manufactures are adding glycerin, aloe vera oil, coconut oil or even almond oil to their sanitizes in a race to combat Coronavirus Disease. These products are being fast tracked for production, some are being distributed to medical clinics, hospitals and first responders.

Many people want a home with clear site lines, this may be especially important for families with children with allergies, or other life threatening conditions. For many families being able to wash dishes in the kitchen, while clearly seeing the child that is snacking in the dinning room is important. Being able to be on the laptop in the living room and being able to see child that is eating in the kitchen is important. Maintaining or creating site lines can be a factor while buying or renovating a home.

Being able to see the earliest signs of a reaction could aid in having time to take emergency actions. My opinion is that it far more important to sit with a child while they they try new foods, however keeping child in site while eating is ideal. Most people know not to leave a young child alone while eating, however this may etend to older child with food allergies. When I took Standard First Aid, the instructor advised not to give a child a new food during bad weather encase you need to call the paramedics.

Another easy home improvement to make is to ensure you can easily see the street address from the road, clearing bushes, or other wise making sure house numbers are clearly visible. Stay Safe This Spring

Look what I found at our local grocery store ShaSha Maple Snaps. Read more about them on ShaSha's blog Shasha Co.’s Maple Snaps!

They are made with Real Canadian Maple Syrup. Manufactured in a peanut-free and dairy-free facility, these cookies are ideal for children to take to school for an afternoon snack. I would have liked to see a "dairy free" symbol along with the nut and peanut free symbol on the packaging.

In 2011 we had the opportunity to go to the ShaSha factory and take a tour read about it here.

When we visited we learned ShaSha factory was actually two buildings, one completely nut free, the other building made products with tree nuts. The snap cookies continue to be made in a peanut and tree nut free facility.

Some of their products are made with ancient grains that some wheat allergic people can tolerate, but celiac people can not. The products are marked wheat free or gluten free or nut free be aware of what YOU react to.

Another artificial fire log made from nut shells, again made from Presidents Choice.

Back in 2011 I reported on Presidents Choice Fire Logs Made From Nut Shells here, the product disappeared, off shelves for a few years. This holiday season Presidents Choice has AGAIN started making fire logs with nut shells. Buying EpiPens in Mexico is near impossible, they are too expensive for Mexicans to buy. So the typically Mexican purchase vials of epinephrine. Both in Canada and United States Paramedics and sometimes Firefighters use traditional syringe and a vial of epinephrine. These people have medical training and have the skills to use syringes. the average citizen is much more able and usually willing to use an EpiPen. An Epipen also is faster, and when seconds count, a traditional syringe and a vial of epinephrine, can take to much time..

When the Price of EpiPens exploded in United States some people made a trip to Canada and purchased the very same EpiPen(s) for about $100 CAN each. Some people even went to Mexico to buy pre-loaded syringes of epinephrine. Many more Americans arranged with some difficulty to get pre-loaded syringes of epinephrine from American Pharmacists.

For around the last ten years, Canadian grocery stores and big box stores often had back to school nut free snack items clustered together, in the seasonal section. These displays went up typically in late August, in time for back to school shopping. In the past all the snack items under back to school sale were "nut free". I am seeing a trend this year to see under a sign reading things like "school snacks" things like granola bars that contain nuts, normally I would also only see these same nut granola ars in the general granola bar section only. In the past I used to see more displays reading "Nut Free School Snacks", with nut free school sized snacks in the displays at the grocery stores.

Again around ten years ago we saw a large number of NEW snack sized nut free products that typically released to grocery stores in late August, this has slowed down considerably. I suspect the need for nut free snacks has been meet, so the need is less, for new nut free products.

On the positive side, I see more products that clearly list they are nut and gluten free or nut and dairy free and many other combinations for people with multiple food allergies.

BEFORE YOU TRAVEL KNOW YOUR EMERGENCY NUMBERS

In Canada and United States (and many other places) 911 gives one number access to emergency services Police/ Fire/ Ambulance then depending on the emergency the dispatcher may send more than on emergency service. However, when travelling internationally some countries have a different number for emergency services, others have separate numbers for Fire/ Police and Ambulance. Even locally some municipalities have Epinephrine on ambulances other on fire trucks, some both. Where I live even the bikemedics, who patrol local events, have epinephrine, bikemedics in different areas may not.

Emergency Numbers:
List Emergency Numbers

Touch A Truck Events:
Touch a Truck events in many cities offer kids the chance to touch vehicles, and talk to the operators. For many young children climbing on a fire truck, ambulance, garbage truck can be fun. Children with life threatening medical issues a chance to climb in an ambulance, speak to a paramedic can be reassuring, when not having an emergency situation such as an allergic reaction. I have witnessed a paramedic walk a young child through the steps of what would happen if they have an episode.
Touch A Truck Events

The Bike Medic Program:
The Bike Medic program enables paramedics to respond to emergencies in small, contained areas that might not be accessible by an ambulance vehicle.
Bike Medics carry equipment that allows them to treat the same life threatening emergencies as a regular paramedic crew.

Children
Young children can and should practice phoning 911 with a unplugged or dead phone, even a toy phone can be used for practice.

An EpiPen costs about NZ $120.00 (As of June 23, 2017 NZ$120.00 = 87.39 US Dollars or 116.01 Canadian Dollars)

The cost of many medicines and medical devices are covered in New Zealand through their public health system. Pharmaceutical Management Agency (PHARMAC) funds access to pharmaceuticals for New Zealanders. The drugs that are approved are available with a prescription for a NZ$5 charge (for children under 13 they are free). Medicines that aren’t fully subsidized will cost more, due to the rules around tendering. In New Zealand when no competition exists often the drug is not covered by the New Zealand government.

Tendering is a process in which government, as payer, negotiates the lowest price for a pharmaceutical. PHARMAC asks pharmaceutical suppliers to provide pricing proposals for off-patent medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Schedule.

In New Zealand, the EpiPens are not funded by Pharmaceutical Management Agency (PHARMAC) so cost people between $NZ120 and $NZ200 per pen per year. Allergy New Zealand CEO Mark Dixon said local allergy sufferers had been watching developments in the US with concern.

In the United States many Americans go to Canada to buy Epipens for $120- $130.

I picked up this advise while taking a First Aid Course many years ago:
Do not offer new foods to a child during bad weather, due to increase in time to get to a hospital during a possible allergic reaction. I would also add if you live far from a hospital, and you have allergies in the family introducing new foods at a friends or family member's house who live closer to a hospital, may be a good idea, depending on allergy history.

Kyle Dine brought up a good point on his blog post Have Baby, Will Travel – Going on Tour with an Infant. Introducing foods – We knew that we were entering the stage of solid food introduction and made a game plan of introducing only fruits and veggies while living on the road. Introducing common allergens would wait until we got home.

How to Make The Most Delicious Rice Milk
Milk protein allergies (MPA) are a recognized problem in young children. Studies show that MPA might affect up to 15% of children but people of any age can have the same allergy and react adversely to milk protein. This includes anaphylaxis which is a serious and potentially fatal allergic reaction.

While living with MPA means avoiding a list of foods and drinks, there are many alternatives that might prove to be even more nutritious, convenient, and practical for you and your family.

What is Rice Milk?
Rice milk is made with rice grain and is a non-dairy milk similar to almond and soy milk. It has more carbohydrate content compared to cow’s milk, does not contain lactose, and is free from cholesterol. Rice milk is sold in stores but, did you know that you can make it at home for a fraction of the cost?

No-Cook Method to Making Rice Milk

Ingredients:
1. 1 cup of your preferred rice grain (uncooked) - This can be white or brown but for more nutrition, you can choose brown rice which is a good source of magnesium, phosphorus, thiamine, vitamin B-6, niacin, iron, and zinc! If you can, go for organically grown brown rice.

2. 4 cups of water.

3. Optional for flavor: salt, honey, and/or vanilla.
Procedure:
1. Wash rice and soak in container overnight (10-14 hours).
2. Drain rice but do not wash. Pour into blender and add 4 cups of water. You can add your flavorings according to your preference.
3. Blend on high for 3 minutes.
4. Use a thin towel or cheesecloth over a bowl to strain the blended mixture. This will separate the rice grains from the milk.
Enjoy chilled and consume no later than one week!
Other uses for rice milk:

Aside from drinking rice milk to replace a dairy-based beverage, you can also use rice milk for your cereals and even for cooking! Here are some of our favorite recipes on the Avoiding Milk Protein blog, all of which use rice milk:

Kids approve these delicious donut holes that are wonderfully made with rice milk.
3. Applehouse Cinnamon Doughnuts

You can also try using rice milk for adding to your morning cereals, coffee, and in making your favorite desserts. If there’s one good thing about having allergies similar to people switching to a healthy lifestyle, it’s being creative and resourceful in the kitchen!

I am getting over pneumonia, I am recovering slowly, but doing much better. I was prescribed two puffers and an antibiotic. This may not be the right treatment for everyone with pneumonia. I have a history of childhood asthma and am sometimes prescribed an inhaler with cold virus induced asthma. SEE YOUR DOCTOR! We are fortunate to have a fairly good insurance plan. I am well aware many do not, I am also thankful for Canada's controls on prices of pharmaceuticals, as many Americans are very concerned with the price of drugs, not that everything is perfect in Canada.

World School Milk Day is celebrated on the last Wednesday in September. The end of the month was chosen as it is a school day in most countries.
Countries around the world celebrate World School Milk Day to celebrate the health benefits of school milk programs. This excludes students with milk allergies,
I have NEVER heard of a school promoting World Pistachio Day, National Peanut Butter Day or National Almond Day, yet World Milk Day is thought of as good, and rarely called advertising.

Many feminine hygiene companies donate menstrual supplies to health classes to get young girls used to their product(s). Shelters need those menstrual supplies more, but donating menstrual supplies to schools leads to brand recognition, brand loyalty and then schools are more likely to keep said brand at the office. These companies know this, so they donate menstruation kits to health and sex-ed classes. Most girls get a free (advertising) products around their first puberty class, in most schools.

Mylan in America does the very same thing, by providing Epipens to schools they often get brand recognition and often brand loyalty. Granted it is a lot scarier to change epinephrine device than menstrual device. It is also cheaper to supply a few dozen pads than a handful of Epipens, even at cost. The difference is people have lots of choices in menstrual devices that are usually reasonable priced.

Ontario Laws First aid and CPR.

Sabrina Shannon DIED School staff did not react properly during an allergic reaction along with the fact Shannon had her Epipen in her locker at the time of her reaction lead to her death. Sabrina's Law was formed. School staff are now required to have allergy training.

Ryan Gibbons DIED He died of an asthmatic reaction, the school principal kept taking, and locking up his inhaler. School staff did not react properly during his asthma attack. Ryan's Law was formed. Students now have a right to carry asthma medications, and staff are required to have training in asthma care, as well schools required to have written asthma plans.

Opinion:
I believe it should be the responsibility of parents/ guardians to provide medications that are not expired. The responsibility of students (when age/ abilities appropriate) to carry meds. The responsibility of schools to train staff enough staff. The responsibility of educators to be trained in first aid. The educators should have enough training in the needs of the students they educate.

I posted about Ambulance Tours it was an opportunity for us to get a tour of an ambulance, and ask questions at a local city event. I believe for many, ambulance tours are an opportunity to tour an ambulance, not during an emergency, and that this may ease concerns. This can relieve anxieties of what can happen when someone has an allergic reaction. It is also an opportunity to ask if your city ambulances (or city fire trucks) who carries epinephrine.

More communities are hosting Touch A Truck Events. Often ambulances are included in these Touch A Truck Events, so Ambulance Tours may be included. Nervous children with allergies, seizures, diabetes can all benefit.

I suggest looking at city websites to see if your city or community hosts one of these events, not all Touch A Truck events include ambulances.

Emergency Preparedness Week

Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week) is an annual event that takes place each year during the first full week of May. This national event is coordinated by Public Safety Canada, in close collaboration with the provinces and territories and partners. It is a time to think about how prepared we are for a flood, earthquake, snowstorm, power outage, fire.

Questions to ask within families:

Do we have several days worth of water on hand should an emergency happen?

Most suggest 72 hours non perishable food and water be available, should an emergency happen. Most people in allergy groups suggest four or five days of food on hand for each allergic person, finding safe food, may be an issue should a wide scale emergency happen.

If our city/ town needs to be evacuated where do family members meet?
Grandma's/ Aunt's house.

Does everybody in the house know where the flashlights/ batteries/ candles are?

Candles made from nuts, coconuts and corn.
Do we have a car safety kit?

Do we have minimum of a week's supply of prescription medications
List of all prescription medications

List of emergency contacts
Sometimes we forget phone numbers with cellphone contact lists.

From UN World Water Day
"World Water Day is an international observance and an opportunity to learn more about water related issues, be inspired to tell others and take action to make a difference. World Water Day dates back to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development where an international observance for water was recommended. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. It has been held annually since then. Each year, UN-Water — the entity that coordinates the UN’s work on water and sanitation — sets a theme for World Water Day corresponding to a current or future challenge. The engagement campaign is coordinated by one or several of the UN-Water Members with a related mandate."
