Wish For the New Year

My New Year's Wish in my role as an allergy safety advocate, is to protect others from injury or death from allergic shock (anaphylaxis). It can take only one to two minutes for a mild reaction to escalate to anaphlaxis. The risk of anaphylaxis is death, or brain damage and organ damage. Death from anaphylaxis can occur within 10 to 15 minutes and is caused by delayed use of medication

The first line and second line medication for anaphylaxis is an EpiPen to deliver life saving epinephrine (see National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Guidelines, December 2010). If an EpiPen is given within the first 1 to 5 minutes of an allergic reaction, the patient has the best chance of survival. Use the EpiPen, then call 911. An EpiPen injection provides relief only for fifteen to twenty minutes. Ten to twenty percent of patients will need more than one dose, so keep a second dose in hand while waiting for paramedics and during transport to hospital.

This is essential, whether your allergy is to bee or wasp stings, medication, latex, or food. It's essential that the allergic person and everyone involved in his or her care know how to correctly use an EpiPen. To assist with training, I sell EpiPen Trainers on my site. A recent Health Canada advisory reminds us to pull the blue safety cap straight out (rather than twist it or pull it off to the side), so that the pin doesn't break in the EpiPen and cause it not to fire. "Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies in relation to permanent exemptions from allergen labelling

The Scientific Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies of the European Food Safety Agency has recently released opinions on the likelihood of individuals suffering allergic reactions in relation to a number of processed foods. The Panel considered it “unlikely” that cereals, nuts or whey used in distilled spirits would lead to severe allergic responses. A similar conclusion was reached for vegetable oils-derived phytosterols and phytosterol esters from soybean and for natural tochopherols from soybean.

It was considered “not very likely” that wheat based maltodextrins or wheat of barley starch based glucose syrups would cause severe allergic responses. None of these products were determined to be of concern to coaliacs, provided the concentration of gluten considered by Codex Alimentarius for foods rendered gluten-free is not exceeded. It was also considered “not very likely” that isinglass would trigger an allergic response when used as a clarifying agent in beer.

The panel considered that milk and milk products used in winemaking may trigger allergic responses.

The panel was not able to draw conclusions in relation to fish gelatine and isinglass used in winemaking, or mustard seed oil due to the paucity of data."

Aside from being vigilant about the ingredients in beverages, adults managing food allergies must also take care to use caution with alcoholic beverages to ensure that their judgment is not negatively affected and that their ability to make decisions, recognize a reaction, and administer
medication is not impaired. Alcohol can influence how quickly a food allergen is absorbed into the body, resulting in symptoms occurring at a faster pace."

important, potentially life-saving new rules were about to be approved, public opposition from a single powerful lobby group - the beer industry - has put them at risk Every other food and beverage product already has, or will have product labels providing important information for consumers. But this one industry wants special treatment by receiving an exemption from the new rules.
That is not fair!"

"The array of clarifying agents available include; Activated carbon, Bentonite (wine grade), Casein and caseinates, Diatomaceous earth, Egg albumen, Gelatin (low bloom), Isinglas, Kieselsols, Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and Sparkalloid. Commercial combinations of some of these are also available.

Fining agents work on the principle that all of the particles responsible for the clouding or haze in a wine or beer have an electrical charge. As an example gelatin has a positive charge meaning that it can attract negatively charged materials. In binding to the negatively charged materials the combined weight increases resulting in settling to occur. In practice it’s usually necessary to have finings agents of different charges added sequentially to the wine in order remove the materials of various charges contained in the wine."

About Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative

Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative (CAI) is a network of Canadian families formed to raise greater awareness of the realities Canadians with severe allergies face every day. Their primary goal is to urge Parliamentarians and federal officials to respond to allergy concerns involving public awareness and education, food safety, transportation, and research; with an ultimate goal to reduce the risks of preventable anaphylactic attacks throughout Canada.

The CAI has made progress by working closely with MP Dean Allison in raising awareness with his Parliamentary colleagues. I never imagined spending our holidays in Toronto, but with a peanut allergy we are enjoying our new found freedom.

Thanks to our friend at Avoiding Milk Protein, we have traversed the city in search of peanut free confections! (see Avoiding Milk Protein's List Nut Free Bakeshops) Last summer we tried to find Loostsalicious, the peanut free ice cream parlor. To our dismay it was closed, however we hopped back in our minivan to visit Richman’s Bakery. We overindulged on cookies, cakes, breads, muffins, cupcakes, donuts- did I miss anything?

This summer we had the pleasure of overindulging in The Cupcake Shoppe’s delicious cupcakes. The kids’ favorite was the gumball topped cupcake! Mine was the chocolate chip cookie dough flavored cake with matching frosting!

In addition to cupcakes we purchased chocolate confections at Lollicakes, an adorable little shop in a section of Toronto called Davisville. When we return for chocolates, I will most certainly build in time to shop around this great neighborhood!

But beyond sweet treats we have found some great restaurants and attractions. Most recently we dined at Live and Breathe, aka L.A.B. an up and coming Toronto gastronomic hit! The chef/owner and staff are very friendly, preparing fresh, seasonal, “molecular gastronomy” to excite the taste buds! They provided us with an exceptional meal and were extremely accommodating of our allergy.

Pizzaria Rustica is another allergy friendly establishment, with 2 locations near the Rogers Center. Their pesto is void of nuts and they have gluten free options available.

I also subscribe to “Toronto for Kids,” a great weekly enewsletter highlghting weekly family events in Toronto.

We have had some great adventures in Toronto! It is about what we CAN do!

An allergy educational video, Jude the Dude has a Halloween Party.

Creating Jude the Dude has been one of the most positive experiences of my life. I am blown away by the positive feedback and "thank you's" I have received from creating a peanut allergy role model. So, I am starting to write more Jude the Dude books to portray a peanut allergy child coping through various stages and events of life (Chrismas/Birthdays/Halloween/First School Days), etc.

In these books, Jude will also learn about other food allergies as other characters with various food allergies will be introduced. This will open the Jude the Dude character to children facing other/multiple food allergies. In the Halloween Book, I introduce a new character, Henry, who has multiple food allergies. Henry is allergic to peanuts (like Jude) but he also allergic to cheese and milk products.

The Halloween book, in which Jude the Dude throws a Halloween party, emphasizes general safety: carrying your Epi-Pen at all times, reading labels, not eating store bought baked goods, and having others wash their hands if they touch something a food allergy child is allergic to. It also shows Jude telling the store baker that he cannot their products (showing the confidence Jude has to tell others about his allergy). But, it also sends a positive message on the value of great friends working together to keep each other safe.

School Program Increases Allergens in Classrooms

School Program Increases Allergens in Classrooms
The St. Paul Public School District (SPPS) - one of the largest in Minnesota - recently began implementing "Breakfast To Go," a new program that provides free breakfasts to all students regardless of income. Under the new program, students will pick up breakfast food immediately upon entering the school building, and carry it in a bag to classrooms throughout the school building to eat during the first few minutes of class time.

According to SPPS, "Breakfast to Go" (or B2G) will reduce tardiness in schools, improve student health and enhance student achievement. The program is part of an effort by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to ensure that all children in public schools receive healthy breakfasts. Last Spring, Chicago Public Schools adopted a similar district-wide program amid much controversy.

Recently, AFAA raised concerns with SPPS regarding the potential spread of allergens throughout the school building and the threat they pose to children with food allergies. On Friday an AFAA delegation (consisting of parents, allergists, food scientist, safety inspector, and a MN Department of Health official) met with top St. Paul Public School district administrators. After a productive exchange, AFAA reiterated its commitment to helping SPPS find remedies to this and other issues in the program.

Parents whose children are affected by this program in St. Paul or in other Minnesota school districts are urged to contact AFAA(info@minnesotafoodallergy.org) and do a short survey.

Our daughter fell in love with Disney several years ago. But, we never thought we would become Disney theme park fans like we are now. However, travel and vacations with a daughter who has a severe dairy allergy have always been difficult. Then, a few years ago, we found out that Disney World has a system for handling food allergies at their restaurants and resorts. We had to check it out. We learned more about the program, the reservation process, and the parks and then booked our first trip. And, we had a blast! We still had a few issues with our daughter’s allergy, but we had a fabulous, and less worrisome vacation, and lots of great memories. Now, after several years of food allergy planning at Disney, we still find it difficult to plan. Additionally, we often meet other food allergy parents who did not even know about the program until they arrived! Stuffed Peppers Bosnian Styles

1 LB TURKEY, GROUND

½ CUP UNCOOKED WHITE RICE, OR PARTIALLY COOKED BROWN RICE

1 LARGE ONION, FINELY CHOPPED

2 CLOVES GARLIC, MINCED

1 SMALL CARROT, GRATED

1 ½ TEASPOONS VEGETABLE SOUP BASE POWDER

1 TEASPOON FRESH DILL WEED, CHOPPED

4 TABLESPOONS FRESH PARSLEY, CHOPPED

8 MEDIUM HUNGARIAN/GYPSY PEPPERS

1 MEDIUM TOMATO

SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE

1. Preheat oven to 425ºF.

2. In a food processor combine the onion and garlic and pulse until chopped to your liking. Fry in a pan until onions become translucent. Add ground turkey and fry until completely brown. Remove from the stove and add chopped carrot, rice, vegetable soup powder, dill weed, parsley, salt and pepper.

3. Wash and core the peppers. Using a fork, pierce each pepper a couple of times to let the steam escape during baking.

4. Slice the tomato into eight disks. Stuff each pepper with the filling then use a tomato slice to close the opening to the pepper. Use remaining tomato slices for garnish and for covering the bottom of the baking pan.

5. Sprinkle peppers with a little oil and place in the oven. Bake for 40 minutes, until skin is blackened.

Serves 8

Note: For a more rustic feel, take 3 medium tomatoes, slice into wedges, and spread on the bottom of the baking pan.

Is it really corn free?

I heard a report that "For those with corn allergies, it may help to know that Authentic Foods makes a corn-free xanthan gum. It's fermented from a bacteria harvested from plants in the cabbage family."

I posted this information on Avoiding Milk Protein's Facebook wall, I expected some conversation from the corn allergic, little did I know how much conversation I would get.

At the time Authentic Foods web site did have their xanthan gum listed as corn free. They have now removed the "corn free" status on their website.

Nicole From Corn Freedom joined in the conversation, on Facebook, as she had her concerns with Authentic Foods "corn free" claims. She posted on her blog the letter she got from University of Nebraska Food Allergy Research Resource Program here on her blog.

U of Nebraska told Nicole that they never heard of Authentic Foods nor do they do any testing for corn. Nicole said that Authentic Foods claimed to her, that Authentic Foods products were tested by U Nebraska in their conversations.

Authentic Foods was tagged in the comments but did not join the debate on my Facebook wall, they are still welcome to comment on my blog or comment on my wall post.

Connie Sarros author of six gluten-free books, continued the debate with her Gluten-free Newsletterette by saying:

Corn-free Status of Xanthan Gum

Friends on Facebook or members of the St. John's Listserv may be aware of the concerns that have arisen regarding the corn-free status of xanthan gum. It's a long, involved tale to tell, but I'll skip the investigative details and jump to the conclusion.

Authentic Foods has advertised their xanthan gum as being corn-free. I spoke with Steve at Authentic Foods; he explained that people allergic to corn will not have a problem with his xanthan Gum. "To produce xanthan gum, bacteria is fed a sugar solution (glucose). Sometimes this sugar syrup is made from corn which contains no corn proteins. It is corn proteins that trigger allergic reactions. Because this corn syrup has no corn proteins, people allergic to corn will not have a reaction. After the bacteria has replicated, the sugar syrup (glucose) is then washed away by filtration. The remaining bacteria is then killed by pasteurization leaving it to go through a series of reactions to extract the outer cell wall of the bacteria producing xanthan gum."

NOW Foods replied: "Xanthan gum is USA sourced. Though not tested it is considered gluten free." They state that the growth medium used contains soy bean protein, corn starch, calcium carbonate, and yeast. They added, "Despite this fermentation base, our supplier indicates the product to be corn free in their allergen statement to us."

Bob's Red Mill replied: "Thank you for your inquiry. Our Xanthan Gum isn't considered corn free, as the manufacturer uses corn in processing. This item is produced in both Austria and France."

Essential Depot said their xanthan gum is processed from corn and is not corn-free (though it is gluten-free).

TIC Gums, makers of Ticaxen Xanthan Gum, says, "We do not test for corn as part of our routine tests as most customers do not require this." They added that they do not consider their gum corn-free.

Individuals wrote to me with their personal experiences and companies wrote to me sending me the data they had on xanthan gum. Using gluten as an example, Dr. Fasano stated that 20 ppm is a reasonable amount of gluten for "most" people. Some celiacs are highly sensitive and this amount of gluten affects them adversely. This same principle holds true for corn allergies. or any allergies for that matter. Some people can tolerate more than others. Each person with a corn allergy has to look at the facts and make up their own mind as to what products they will use.

Allergens in the Garden

Many animal/ bird feeders contain peanuts and other nuts. The picture to the right, is one of the more unusual bird products containing peanuts, made by C & S Products Company.

Coco Mulch is made from organic coconut husks, although most nut allergic people can tolerate coconuts, people with coconut allergies may want to avoid this product.
If your allergic to nuts or corn you may want to avoid garden pots made from nuts

I was surprised to see peanut seeds at the gardening store, for Canadian climates, as peanuts only naturally grow in warmer climates.

While looking at gardening supplies, I saw lots of things that looked like they contained corn, even gluten corn meal. These Crit'r Cobs however was the most unusual corny item I saw.

I saw a package of Bobbex Deer Repellent the package said "Do not apply if allergic to eggs, soy or fish". Deer repellent is used on flowers, and vegetable gardens, that people do not wish deer to eat or destroy.

There is an article here that also names milk as an ingredient in repelling deer. A number of products I saw last year for repelling deer contained fish. Here is a gopher repellent that contains peanut hulls, casein and fish oil.

Most of the repellents I saw at the gardening centre did not name the ingredients, as labelling laws do not apply. The products are not ment to be eatten, so they do not legally require the listing of ingredients. Because of contact reactions, as well as inhalling many products can cause reactions, this can be problomatic for people with allergies.

Peanut Grass according to this article peanut grass is more closely related to grass than peanuts, I'm not sure how much of a concern for peanut allergic, peanut grass is.

Don't Feed Me has become On the Wings of Hope

We are still dedicated to providing information and support to individuals with Celiac disease and food allergies. Our company and website were created in 2008 when my granddaughter Aivah was diagnosed with Celiac disease and a casein allergy. We began as Don't Feed Me, LLC. "Don't Feed" was our initial concern. Since that time, we have learned there is hope for the future. We chose the hummingbird for our new logo because the name Aivah means small bird. The tiny hummingbird is a symbol for accomplishing things that seem impossible and teaches us how to find the joy of living from our own life circumstances. With time, information and support we learn to find the hope and joy of living with the challenges of Celiac disease and food allergies.

On The Wings of Hope offers information, support and resources to help lessen the frustration and stress that Celiac disease and food allergies can create. We have been where you are. Let us help you find that hope. We will carry you on our wings until you do.

Her comment said... My children are both allergic to nuts, peanuts and sesame. My son will be 5 in April (this would be a FANTASTIC birthday present!) and my daughter is 2 1/2. L, my son, has a very good understanding of his allergies and really keeps a close eye on what people feed him and his sister. He's trying to teach N, my daughter, how to say no to "bad" food and to understand their differences. He's also learning to read, so this would be an awesome incentive! I'm glad they have each other to go through this together. We babysit 2 days a week for a family with 2 kids who also have the same allergies and I'm glad to know their parents can be secure in the fact their kids are being well taken care of. Our motto around here is "We may be a little nutty, but we don't eat 'em!" Gets the kids giggling every time!!

I've been wanting to share this news for so long, I can't believe it's finally time. Here goes: this week, after 11 months of wrangling, we closed on a small building in New Paltz, NY that will soon become the new Lagusta's Luscious world headquarters! Garden Pots Made From Nuts

UPDATE: some of the links in this post are boken however Johnson Florists still lists peanuts and coconut fiber made into flower pots.

Tengzhou Shengbaoshi Bio-Technology Co. has produced biodegradable garden pots made from maize straw [corn] peanut shells, rice hull bamboo.

They are made in china but being marketed through various international trade sites like: Alibaba and Made in China

Interestingly the international trade sites have more allergy information than the company's website itself. Some of the products simply say plant fibers but do not say what kind of plant fibers, others are clearly marked peanut fibers. They also contain corn, rice and bamboo powder.

It was not all that long ago I posted about fire logs made from tree nuts. For some time Duraflame fire logs have had nuts in them, but I was surprised when I found President's Choice logs made from nut shells.

An Avoiding Milk Facebook friend, also said Our Complements brand of fire logs are made with nuts. We often discuss odd places We find allergies on Karen Avoiding Milk Facebook, if you want to join in, or read more.

All biodegradable products contain milk or plant protein, most often corn. Biodegradable products like plastics, paper products can be made from milk, corn, wheat and more. The label does not have to say what allergens are in these non food products. Cross contamination has happened, eating a corn free meal from environmentally friendly plate made from corn for example.

Minnesota Food Code Rule Revision

Foods Derived from Allergens:
Supplemental Recommendation Adopted by
Food Code Rule Revision Committee

On February 24th the FDA Food Code Minnesota Rule Revision Committee voted unanimously to adopt language regarding foods derived from the 8 major allergens in the U.S. Now foods derived from the 8 major U.S. allergens will be treated as carefully as the allergens themselves.

The provision supplements the food allergy recommendations adopted by the full committee in January. The recommendations passed in January addressed allergens, and employees' demonstration of knowledge.

The FDA Food Code affects restaurants, bakeries, groceries, nursing homes, hospitals, schools, camps, catering, convenience stores, vending machines, and other entities that prepare or sell food to the public. Adoption of the allergen recommendations was a critical development in the lengthy Rule Revision process, which many states undergo. Advocates in other states may urge adoption of language and agency materials modeled after what is being developed Minnesota.

The Allergen Subcommittee, which drafted and proposed the food allergy recommendations to the full committee, included representatives from the MN Department of Agriculture, Cargill, Supervalu, MN Grocers' Association, St. Paul Department of Safety and Inspections, and the Anaphylaxis and Food Allergy Association of Minnesota (AFAA). AFAA's Executive Director, Nona Narvaez, served as Chair of the subcommittee.

In addition to allergens, other issues addressed by the Food Code Rule Revision committee are USFDA 3-Tier System, Science-Based/HACCP/Risk-Based Code, and Food Manager Certification.

It is the beginning of March Break for us. For us this means play dates, family outings. Some of you may enjoy reading my Ontario Family Fun Blog where I post some of the fun places we have been, or might want to visit some day, in Ontario.

Bridget Batson has a new book out Jude The Dude The Peanut Allergy Kid

The first thing that grabbed me was the quirky pictures in this book. They are part carton, part photograph. Jude learns he has a peanut allergy, he over comes his fear of his epi-pen shot, and practices with his trainer.

He does what most allergic kids do, he brings his peanut free cupcakes to places, takes his medication everywhere. Jude also sits at peanut free table at school and learns other ways to live safely.

One thing Jade does (that few allergy kid book characters do) he grows up to be a successful man with kids of his own.

Strange But True

I must be in a strange mood, or the world has gone nuts. First have a safe National Peanut Butter Lovers Day to those with nut and peanut allergies.

Did you know fire starters (those things you light, to start a fire) could be made from Macadamia Nuts and Soy or how about corn.

If you don't want to start a fire with allergens, be aware of Peanut Oil Lamps

Be aware of synthetic fiber curtains made from soybeans, milk and spandex.

Want to do a craft, be aware of Milk Whey Yarn made from milk and soy. Another yarn to be aware of is Banana Fiber Silk Yarn Their are many more of these enviromentally friendly yarns people with allergies should be aware of.
