Can You Compost Painted Teal Pumpkins

We have given out food free treats at our house, even when I was a kid. I thus support the #TealPumpkinProject.

As a gardener, I have a compost bin in our backyard, our regional government also has a green bin composting program. I contacted our region to find out if our municipality could accommodate painted pumpkins. This was their response:

Good afternoon Karen,

I have been forwarded your e-mail with regards to the pumpkins painted Teal for the allergy awareness at Halloween. Pumpkins that are painted with regular water based kids craft paint can be placed in with the yard waste to be composted. Pumpkins that are painted with non-natural paints are to be placed in with the garbage.

This response was from a Region's Waste Management Collection Technician



I think we will do a paper pumpkin painted teal once again this year, if I wanted to do a craft painted pumpkin, I'd rinse it before composting. Our city sells skate/swim passes so we will be giving those out this year, along with other dollar store goodies, for our food free treats.

We have ALWAYS offered non food items for Trick or Treaters. Even as a child my Father bought a 100 pack of Halloween Pencils, that lasted us years of visitors. Party Packagers offers a large section of non food items, Skeleton sun glasses, sheets of stickers and more many more items. I'll also offer candy in a seperate bowl.

For our Teal pumpkin, my local dollar store was out of teal paint, so I'll mix my blue, green and a little white paint together,to get teal paint for my paper pumpkin.

Green Halloween

We are one of those families who hand out Halloween pencils, plastic rings, ghost pencil sharpeners and other non food, little treats. I believe in candy in moderation, with allergies this often makes even more sense. Although I always buy dairy free candy for my allergic child, to have in moderation.

I just found out about Green Halloween

From their website:
"While most of the neighborhood handed out the requisite Tootsie Rolls and M ‘n M’s , a few homes placed non-candy treats like bubbles and stickers in my girls’ pumpkins. I was so thrilled that someone thought outside the candy-box, that while shouting, “Thank You!” at the top of my lungs, I made a note to myself to remember to trick-or-treat at these homes the following year. But after winding through several streets in the dark, I had already forgotten which homes were candy-free. I mentioned to a nearby parent, “Wouldn’t it be great if there were a sign you could place on your door or window that notified trick-or-treaters that their upcoming treat would be healthy?” This way, parents could seek out those homes and turn trick-or-treating into a scavenger hunt – a hunt for treasures rather than treats.

Safe Halloween

We had a happy and safe Halloween. At one of our friend’s houses, they had non food treats waiting for our girls.

I watched the Halloween Parade at our children’s school. The older kids planned Halloween games, and a haunted house in the gym. Each class had a turn at the Haunted house, and Halloween games like bean bag pumpkin toss.

My younger child, whom does not have food allergies, brought home a bag of Halloween crafts and projects. Our older allergic child had Halloween worksheets and loved the haunted house in the gym. It was nice to see our school do things non candy related.

Happy Halloween to all our Pagan friends, as they celebrate harvest and their new year.

We are getting ready for Halloween, a skeleton in the window, another hanging from outside. I have a bowl of treats from the dollar store for the Trick Or Treaters. I have to give out, Halloween pencils, bats spooky rings and little containers of bubbles.

Hidden away I have Halloween candy for my allergic child to trade for. My children are still changing their minds what they want to dress up as. I have a large box filled with Halloween costumes and dress up clothes, so everyone will be fine.

Vermont Nut Free are pleased to announce that we have just
launched our newly redesigned website.

The new look comes just in time for Halloween which is only a little less than four weeks away.

There is still time to order and recieve your chocolates on time but hurry because everything is going fast.

Halloween Plans

Our plan for Halloween so far is, to hand out Halloween pencils, spooky rings and plastic bats from the dollar store. I used to hand out balloons till I thought of people with latex allergies.

To replace “unsafe” treats from trick or treating, I bought some dairy free chocolate bars from Ross Chocolates, and “non cream” Life Savers. I’ll also get some Pure Fun candy after all if it has to be candy, some should be organic.
