Dairy Free Mylk Chocolate Truffles

News From Gnosis Chocolate

Mylk - yes, mylk - We said it! We'd like to introduce (drumroll, please!) raw vegan "milk" chocolate truffles!!! Cacao from Madagascar is considered by many to create some of the world's finest chocolate. Naturally fruity in flavor, it is unusually rich in antioxidant flavonoids, and nutrients. Since Malagasy cacao comprises less than 1% of the world's production, our Mylk Chocolate Truffles are - even beyond its kaleidoscopic flavor spectrum - a rare gift that Nature has entrusted us to bring to you. I personally guarantee that this chocolate is raw, and unlike any other milk chocolate you've had!  Combined with Balinese 70% shell and Coconut Palm Sugar to sweeten, you won't miss a thing while enjoying this mylk chocolate truffle void of dairy and refined sugar.

Bluestocking News

News From Bluestocking

I've been wanting to share this news for so long, I can't believe it's finally time. Here goes: this week, after 11 months of wrangling, we closed on a small building in New Paltz, NY that will soon become the new Lagusta's Luscious world headquarters! We're beginning renovations now, and by the end of May we are hoping to be able to welcome you to your friendly local teeny tiny organic fair-trade vegan chocolate shop! So exciting!!!

On to the April Chocolates! Yes, there is more than one. There are, in fact, SIX.

April 2011 Chocolates of the Month:
Three flavors and two sizes of chocolate bunnies & chocolate matzo toffee

For the spring holidays, we went all out: adorable bunnies in two sizes filled with peanut butter mousse, pistachio praline, or solid chocolate, and our much-beloved matzo toffee. The matzo toffee is buttery (vegan!) toffee sprinkled with the barest whisper of sea salt, liberally laced with lashings of bittersweet chocolate, all set against a backdrop of matzo that makes you feel that it might, in some way, be healthy. Well, it's made from organic and fair-trade ingredients, does that count? Yum.

Bluestocking Vegan Valentine's Chocolates

News From Blue Stocking Special vegan Valintine Chocolates

Here we are: the hot pink bullseye at the middle of the chocolate year.

February 2011 Chocolate of the Month:
Valentine's Bonbons

For this special Valentine’s month, I wanted to create a chocolate box that would encompass everything I know about love. Thus, this box represents what I see as the two key aspects of love. The sweet simple heart shape is filled with rosewater (dairy-free) cream, punctuated with a high note of pomegranate. It’s smooth and sweet as a Sunday stroll with the love of your life. This chocolate represents those beautiful, perfect, simple days where love makes you feel utterly content, adored, and safe. Nice. Fun. Cute. All that good stuff.

The anatomical heart, on the other hand, is the equally beautiful but often bloody and wild side of love: the kind of love that leaves your heart pounding, your pulse racing—an almost out-of-control intensity that can be a little terrifying, but is deeply healthy in the long run. This represents the kind of love that reminds you you’re alive in the deepest sense, for the times when your heart is raw and feels like it’s beating on the outside of your body. This is an intense bonbon. It’s a solid chocolate made with 66% dark chocolate, packed with lightly crushed cacao nibs, locally-roasted coffee beans, black salt enriched with volcanic minerals, and crunchy bits of bright dried cherries. It’s painted with red-tinted cocoa butter that’s colored with an all-natural beet juice-based food coloring, because while love does sometimes hurt, it shouldn’t have anything to do with anything fake—especially artificial food coloring.

This special Valentine’s Box comes with four rosewater cream hearts and five intense anatomical hearts, but if you’d prefer just a box of all one or the other, that’s fine too, just make a note in the “notes” field of the PayPal page when you order (or email us). But what’s one without the other?

Want more ethically-sourced (organic! fair-trade! vegan!), artisanal Valentine's Day suggestions? We've got 'em! Furious Vulvas are excellent slightly x-rated gifts for all the feisty feminists on your V-day list, and our Pink Box of truffles and Raspberries de Pizan are perennial Valentine's treats, too. And what loved one wouldn't adore a subscription to the Chocolate of the Month club?

Introducing Frozen Vegan Mozzarella Teese Sticks!

We've been busy with a few really awesome things that we want to share with you.

Frozen Vegan Mozzarella Teese Sticks
Available now at Vegan Essentials!

Since we launched Vegan Mozzarella Teese Sticks at Chicago Diner as part of a benefit for Mercy For Animals the response has been overwhelming. It's been so great that we felt pressured to get these outside of Chicago as quickly as possible. We are happy to announce that, along with our friends at Vegan Essentials, we are now selling Frozen Vegan Mozzarella Teese Sticks to everyone!

These are incredible. Stretchy, crunchy, great flavor, great texture and FULLY VEGAN! They're very convincing and are receiving great reviews from vegans and non-vegans. They come approximately 15 sticks (10oz) to a bag and ship frozen.

If you want some don't hesitate. These WILL go quickly. We're doing our best to keep up with production on these, but there's a very good chance they may sell out soon. Over time these will start making it out to other stores both online and off so you can buy locally. But for now this is the only place you can buy them for home cooking!

Order today (Friday December 17th, 2010) and take advantage of a 1-day only 15% off promotion at Vegan Essentials.

Also if you are in or around Chicago PLEASE go to Chicago Diner and order the Vegan Mozzarella Teese Sticks. $1 of each order goes straight to Mercy For Animals, and you get to eat awesome food. How cool is that? Available through the end of the year, so you have only a few weeks left.

News From Bluestocking

From
Blue Stocking
A vegan chocolate company!
Newest project:
Chocolates of the Month!

As a fun challenge for us and a treat for you, starting in June 2010 (right now!), we will be releasing a brand new chocolate every month! Caramels, creams, fruity bonbons (keep reading!), fancy filled chocolates, special rare truffles, candies—all manner of new exciting sweets are soon to come your way. All are organic, fair trade, handcrafted and 100% vegan, of course (yeah!).

Of course, this means that we're starting a Chocolate of the Month club, too, for those of you who like saving money while guaranteeing that lovely chocolates arrive on your doorstep every month. Check out all the details here.

The June 2010 chocolate is a real beauty: Strawberry-Almond Creams. Glorious rich almond cream with bright, beautiful, local organic strawberries folded in, encased in a thin bittersweet chocolate shell. These are literally farm fresh.

And!!! (this is all so exciting I can't even use full sentences) To continue the farm theme, we’re offering you the option to buy these in my pal Maresa’s gorgeous handmade porcelain containers that look just like the cute cardboard containers you see summer fruit in at farmer’s markets. Hers last longer and are incredibly beautiful.

Of course, you can still get all the Bluestocking Bonbons and beautiful truffles you'd ever need in addition to the special Chocolates of the Month.

Enjoy!

Happy nibbling,

Lagusta

PS: Don't forget to add an ice pack to your order during these summery months!

This cafe makes their own almond milk, their own mock meat from nuts. They have gluten free wraps as well. Lots of vegetarian and vegan choices, although we only stopped for smoothies, during our visit.

Vegans and Milk Allergy

Vegans choose not to consume milk for one or more of the following reasons: environmental, health and ethical reasons. Vegan products are often made on the same machinery as milk (meat or egg) products. Their are also some totally vegan factories who only use milk free equipment. Vegan Outreach has some dangerous (to the milk allergy crowd) ideas.

They are against cleaning equipment for people with milk allergies.
They are misinforming people about cross contamination labeling (both Canada and US)
They do not mention that products that say "dairy free", made on equipment with dairy (with or with or without cleaning), contain milk protein residue that may be fine for vegans, but not those with severe milk allergies.

What about 99% vegan?

Sometimes a product will be labeled as vegan but also be labeled as “99% dairy free.” What is usually going on here is that this product is being made on machines that are also used to make products with dairy. Thus there might be residual dairy on the machinery. Because some people have severe allergies to milk, the company cannot claim that the product is dairy-free. The alternative is for them to steam-clean their machinery before running the carob chips. This would not do anything to advance the cause of veganism – no fewer animals would be exploited. To the contrary, it would increase the costs of the chips, making the vegan product appear less appealing to the general consumer.

To be clear, I believe most vegans do not want to poison people with milk allergies. I understand why almost all vegans consume products on the same lines as milk. I also support milk free lines, rooms, and factories over cleaning lines, for the milk allergic.

See List of Vegan Blogs for vegan information and recipes. Some of these vegan blogs are written by people with allergies.

Spicy Black Bean Soup

Review of Pacific Foods
Spicy Black Bean Soup
it is both gluten free, and vegan.

I used some to thicken a casserole, it gave the casserole both thickness and added taste. I heated some up in a bowl with a little water, and ate it as a soup, it was very filling. I packed some in a Thermos with noodles in my child's lunch and the thermos came back empty. I would of liked to put some on some plain rice, but I don't have any more.

I really like how Pacific Foods has clear allergy information on it's website, though not all of their soups are dairy free, they provide clear information on other food allergens so i give them full credit.

I have also used their dairy free soups to thicken Sheppard's pies and other casseroles.

See their web site here for coupons.

Review DF Crispy Rolled Taccos

We enjoyed Meatless Chipotle Chicken Flavour Rolled Taco (Dairy Free) The package had six jumbo pieces of tacos, that heat up easily. They came out crispy on the out side while still soft on the inside. They had enough spice for me to enjoy, but they where not to spicy for the kids. The serving size was more suitable for a couple than a family, even as a side dish.

We eat meat less a couple times a week, no one missed the meat in these rolled tacos. All Starlite products are dairy free, meat free, trans fat free and completely vegan.

Their Crispy Rolled tacos include:
Chipotle Chicken
Garlic Chicken Style
Santa Fe Chicken Style

Their Soy Taquitos include:
Original Beef Style
Soy Chorizo & Black Bean
Meatless Chicken Style
